Sansevieria Moonshine is an ornamental plant in the asparagus family.

This is a fairly new variety of sansevieria, characterized by an unusual color of the leaves.

The name of the variety is translated as “silver moon”, which corresponds to the color of the leaves-light green with a silver tint.

The leaves of Sansevieria Moonshine are erect, dense, about 10 – 12 inches high and about 2-3 inches wide. As with other varieties, the stem of sansevieria moonshine is absent, the leaves are twisted at the base.

Sansevieria moonshine, unlike its relatives – is a light-loving houseplant. Bright diffused light is necessary to preserve the color of the leaves.

The flower has almost 70 varieties of various shapes and fancy colors, including Moonshine (Silvermoon). This type of sansevieria has a charming silver color and the classic endurance of the progenitor plant. In this article, we will consider how to take care of this plant at home.

Origin

Sansevieria moonshine (Moonshine) – one of the varieties of perennial evergreen plants with dense erect leaves, belonging to the family Agave. The main feature is the absence of a stem. The leaves grow from the base up vertically and thus create a rosette.

This variety has light green leaves with a mysterious bluish-silver tint. Their width is about 2 inches, and the length can reach 10 inches. In the wild, sansevieria grows in dry, rocky soil. It is found in the subtropics of Africa, in Indonesia, South Florida, India, and Madagascar.

Sansevieria Moonshine Care

Sansevieria moonshine is an unpretentious house plant. It perfectly tolerates bright sunlight, constant shade, rare watering, drafts. It reacts poorly to a long stay at a temperature of 00C and significant waterlogging of the soil.

Temperature

For sansevieria trifasciata moonshine, the room temperature is preferred and higher, that is, 18-280C. In winter – not less than 150C. In case of its decrease, the plant will fall into “hibernation” and stop its growth. Moonshine irrigation does not tolerate abundant soil moisture, so watering is carried out only after the soil is completely dry. In summer – 1 time a week, in winter-1 time in 3 weeks.

Lighting

Sansevieria is light-loving, but it can grow in the shade and under artificial light. However, a prolonged lack of light will cause the pattern on the leaves to disappear. At the same time, constant exposure to direct sunlight will cause burns. The flower sansevieria trifasciata moonshine will feel best on the western and eastern windows, and on hot and sunny afternoons in the shade.

Fertilize

Feed sansevieria with mineral fertilizers for indoor plants or cacti, add half the dose indicated on the package.

Fertilize the sansevieria trifasciata moonshine plant during the period of active growth, that is, in the summer no more than once a month.

You don’t need much fertilizer for the Moonshine Snake Plant. Proper light and watering will encourage growth well for your plant.

But if you would like to give it an extra boost you can fertilize a bit during the summer months.

Any fertilizer intended for cactus and succulent varieties will do. Make sure you are using the right amount by following the instructions on the bag.

These plants grow more in the warmer months because they originate from a warmer climate. Adding a small amount of fertilizer can help the plant grow a bit.

But, if you use too much or fertilize too often your plant will suffer. Often this will cause droopy leaves.

Ground

It is optimal to use a loose substrate for better air and moisture permeability.

The plant will feel good in a universal soil with the addition of” baking powder ” (pebbles, sand, perlite).

A mixture of turf, leafy earth and sand in a ratio of 4/2/1 is also suitable.

Potty

Sansevieria Moonshine has powerful roots that can deform or even break the container, so it is better to give preference to thick-walled ceramic pots.

For Moonshine, a wide bowl is suitable – the width of the pot should be twice the height.

Wintering

In winter, the plant will need additional lighting so that it does not lose its original color. It is also necessary to reduce watering to 1 time in three weeks.

When exposed to low temperatures, the flower can stop its growth or even die, so do not leave the Sansevieria Moonshine for a long time under the open windows.

Pruning

The Sansevieria Moonshine pruning procedure is quite simple. In the presence of it is necessary to have only scissors.

In the process, carefully eliminate the old yellowed, damaged, and rotten leaves.

The sansevieria trifasciata moonshine plant is also pruned and dried tips, but do not get carried away, as the Moonshine will stop growing from excessive removal of its “limbs”. It is better to prune sansevieria only if it is absolutely necessary since the plant can be irreparably damaged.

Transfer

Pike tail transplantation is a simple task. It will need a shallow wide pot; water; soil; drainage (pebbles, expanded clay). At the bottom of the new pot is filled with a thick layer of drainage in order to give the maximum amount of air to the roots. 0.5-0.7 inches depending on the size of the container.

The soil is placed on top, after which the Sansevieria Moonshine is planted. The roots of the plant are slightly pressed down by the soil and watered abundantly.

Features of Moonshine breeding

Plants reproduce in three ways:

Cuttings snake plant

A healthy leaf is cut into several parts and placed in the ground.

Potential sprouts are treated with a root-forming stimulator. For an accelerated effect, the ground is covered with a plastic film.

Layering

Periodically, a healthy flower forms lateral layering, which is removed from the general earthen clod and transplanted as a separate plant.

Division of the rhizome

The snake plant is removed from the pot and part of the rhizome is separated with a small rosette of leaves.

The root is dried for a couple of days and deepened into the prepared soil.

Flowering

The plant throws out a long thin stem, on which small inflorescences are located. The white or cream-colored flowers resemble miniature lilies that exude a fresh fragrance.

Sansevieria Moonshine blooms only with negative effects on it: lack of nutrients, a small pot for the rhizome.

Pests and diseases

Excessive watering causes yellowing and, as a result, the death of the leaves at the base of the flower and root fragments. Correct the situation by transplanting with the preliminary elimination of damaged areas of the sansevieria trifasciata moonshine plant.

Low temperatures can cause rotting and softening of the leaves. Sansevieria Moonshine needs to be moved urgently to a warm room.

The spider mite covers the surface of the plant with white spots, which leads to its death. You can save the color by wiping the leaves with a damp cloth, with a strong infection with actellic.

Thrips give themselves away by light spots on the leaf and larvae under it. Gradually, the plant becomes silvery-brown. Thrips is destroyed by insecticides.

The mealybug first warps and then kills the leaves. Get rid of the pest with the help of karbofos.
